“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?”

Faith, Jesus, Religion

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?  It’s a powerful question! I spend a good amount of time discussing spiritual journeys with people. I still think it’s interesting, or at least noteworthy is that we ALL seem to have one.  I still like the quote from Mark Lilla:

“To most humans, curiosity about higher things comes naturally, it’s indifference to them that must be learned.”

It seems that all of us are seeking some higher power. We are seeking something bigger than ourselves. We want to connect to something transcendent. No matter what you say, we all seem to be drawn to this idea that we were supposed to live forever. But so far, through all of our stories, it seems like finding the answers to these questions in religion alone, just doesn’t happen.

I think this is the exact reason that Jesus doesn’t invite us deeper into religion, but actually extends an invitation out of it. One of his most famous interactions is with a man much like you and me. This man asked Jesus how to find eternal life.

Jesus doesn’t give him rules to follow, he doesn’t give seven pillars, a path to enlightenment or even a holy set of scriptures. He gives him an invitation. He says that God so loved the world he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

This is always what has attracted me to Jesus. He doesn’t give us a religion, he gives us an invitation out of them. That’s why I love later in his life when Jesus said this:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

So, where has your spiritual journey taken you? Are you beginning to find the empty pursuits of religion? Consider this; it might be, just maybe, time to give a relationship a shot.
